For GMAT/IELTS Aspirants

December 16th, 2008

Set for GMAT/ IELTS? Looking forward to study in a foreign University? Apprehensive if your choice of a UK, US University is right? Well, in that case, we will give you a brief insight into how education at foreign Universities would be like.

Enhanced library facilities

The library techniques of UK, US Universities undoubtedly cannot match those of Indian Universities (no offense to our Indian libraries). The facility of the library to stay up all night long surfing numerous rows of books for some assignments that’s due next day can be quite an experience.

Better access to global database

With the University providing you with your own account to have an access to international journals by renowned professors, which otherwise requires payment to refer them, the learning process becomes smooth. Very smooth, in fact.

Learning experience

We at India can only refer to the business or for that matter any book written by prominent professors, but if you are in a foreign University you could actually hear a lecture or presentation by them. Sounds thrilling! Needless to mention the international exposure you would get in a class of students from different countries.

There is more which an individual can experience only when one is out there in a foreign University. Hopefully these basic methodologies should suffice to help you boost your morale.

Cheers!

Why IELTS?

December 15th, 2008

“I am no Archimedes”, laments every MBA aspirant weak in Math or having only basic fundas of it. We know such competitors who are not good with numbers find themselves slogging day and night to get through the Quantitative section of an MBA entrance test. Yes, it can be grueling and in most cases futile too. But there is always a way out, which in your case is IELTS.

IELTS is a passport to British, Canadian, New Zealand and Australian Universities. With the changing trends a few American Universities have begun to accept IELTS score as an enrolment criteria to their Universities.

For IELTS you don’t have to be an Archimedes in mathematic equations or analyze a complex graph. In fact this test has got no trace of Mathematics. Good communication skills would more than suffice for your acceptance in a good University. The test pattern is designed to scrutinize your command over English by conducting reading, writing, listening and speaking tests. It’s important you are familiar with the foreign English accent else you might get clean bowled in listening and speaking skills.

Undoubtedly IELTS can be a smooth sail for those stuck in the monsoon of Math, but this entrance test requires at least 2-3 years of work experience. It is mandatory.

Well then stop cribbing about your zero knowledge in Math; you have another highway to drive you to your destination.

Cheers!

MBA Aspirants Say On MBA…

December 14th, 2008

We had a little survey among hopeful MBA candidates and this is what they had to say on “why would I want to be an MBA”

The Glitz.

The glamour loving youngsters accepted “we like the formal dress of an MBA – the suit, the coat, the tie, the file and the plush cabin… also the Parker pen”.

Show me the MoNEY.

There is one section that wants to be an MBA to collect wherewithal for luxury. “I like the money” is there motto. (Well, we all love money. Don’t weJ)

I’ m My Boss!

Another bunch of youngsters vehemently answered “I love to boss around”. A taciturn answer that says all.

The IIM infatuation.

Yet another group winced “I want to see IIM-A”.

Follow The Herd. “That is what everybody is doing. Aren’t they?” was another category’s comatose reply.

SleePYheads.

There are few who seemed to be lost as they prattled “Don’t know”. Probably they queue up for MBA merely because they see others queued up.

And there comes the most deliberate chunk that has done their homework well and knows what they are getting into. “Everyone has to be a manager. Whatever you do, you need to know to manage it well” is what they said.

Well said!

It is paradoxical that most of the MBA (most, not all) aspirants are not very sure why they want to choose MBA as their career. We believe that knowing the reasons for your choice is very important as it would help you do your tests methodically and get a better result. So, next time when you slog hard, in some coaching centre, for the MBA entrance test, be sure what and why an MBA is.

Good Luck!

Study During Recession

December 13th, 2008

Economic meltdown may be nerve wrecking to all around the globe but for this year’s MBA aspiring candidates or anyone wanting to pursue higher studies, recession period is a golden chance. Ironic, isn’t?

It is speculated that by 2011 or 2013 economic conditions would be better and the market would bound back giving the fresh degree holders ample job opportunities. Students dreaming to go abroad can now sit back and heave a sigh of relief, for the Government and the Bank are now not so conservative about the loan policies and the interest rates. Well, the future loanees seem to have a good time as the amount of loan allowed by the Indian Banks has been raised. Now, that’s quite a news!

Also, there has been a change in the Government’s policy on working months on student VISA which is now extended from 12 months to 29 months. That comes as icing on cake to all those wanting to go abroad.

Not just students but those at work who are made redundant can take this recession period as the time to upgrade their skills by taking higher education. When the job market is menacing and you are redundant, the best option is to get back to studies. Once the market is back to its normal condition (which is bound to happen, in case you are doubtful) you can go back to work with fresh skills.

So, MBA contenders, those made redundant and those ambitious ones desiring to travel to other country for higher studies, this is the time to make the most of it. The credit crunch across the world is a serious problem but for you folks it may be a solution.

Cheers!

Ernst & Young employee’s gyaan to MBA Aspirants

December 12th, 2008
nimit

Nimit : Eager & Young

To be hired by Ernst & Young is no plain sailing. We are sure it wasn’t easy for Nimit either. Nimit Tiwari, a third year management student of Symbiosis Institute of Telecom Management (SITM), and a future employee of Ernst & Young gives CampusFever an interview through email on his entry to SITM.

Nimit is better known known as Tiwari G(Ji) on his campus and amongst his friends. Here is what he had to say to young MBA aspirants.

CampusFever(CF): How should the students go about applying for admission to MBA   colleges?

Tiwari G (TG): Once you are through the MBA entrance tests, do not just stick to one MBA college. It’s always safer to apply to quite a number of colleges. Opportunities don’t come again and again!

CF: How was the initial placement procedure and how do you think candidates should tackle it?
TG: One should act like a manager from the very beginning. That helps one to build one’s confidence. When you are called for GD, divide the content of the topic based on several parameters like economic, social, personal, political, spiritual etc. This helps one to be clear in one’s ideas.

CF:  What is it that a candidate appearing for interview should have?
TG:  It one’s confidence that can do wonders. Content, definitely, matters but your attitude is equally important. Act like a LEARNER. And you won’t be disappointed!

CF: How is life in an MBA college?
TG:  To experience a different life one must land in an MBA college. There are so many activities and responsibilities that have to be carried out efficiently – presentations, cultural activities, academics and many more.  Perhaps, this helps us to become good managers in future when we are out under the sun.

The CampusFever team wishes Nimit good luck for his journey ahead at Ernst & Young.

C’mon …

December 7th, 2008

We are sure many of the CATers have yet not evaluated their score for the fear of the inevitable. (For first time visitors, the previous blog will give you a clear idea of what we are talking- http://campusfever.com/blog/exams/cat2008scorecalulator/ -).

We know a lot of you would argue that a not-expected score –high or low- would make you take the rest of the tests for granted or subdue your excitement for the forthcoming similar entrance exams. C’mon, you are going to be an MBA- a management guru- and soon would be, a bigwig managing big businesses; little hiccups in marks (which God forbids) should not, er, hit hard.

Also your this year CAT score figure out would help you know where you stand and what you lack (may be you don’t lack anything). There is no denying that CAT is a standard MBA test and its approximated score will in turn help you gear up for a better performance in the next race of entrance tests - FMS, GMAT, IBSAT, JMET, MAT, NMAT, SNAP, XAT.

We “have been there and done that” and therefore sincerely opine that estimating the result of the previous written test always leads to a guiding road. So, gear up, leave all your fear and doubts behind, take down your score. May be you scored full on full…
The forthcoming MBA entrance tests in December:

MAT - Dec 7, 2008

JMET - Dec 14,2008

SNAP - Dec 21, 2008

NMAT - Dec 28,2008

Good luck!

The CampusFever Team.

Clever, Capable CAT Calculator!

November 21st, 2008

Now that the CAT is out of the bag, it sure is churning your grey cells with dubious thoughts of whether or not you will land up in the much vaunted IIMs, or if MDI will brand you or not? Well, all this will remain undecided until IIM releases your score on Jan 9th, 2009; and that’s a way too long! Relax. Fret no more. We, at CampusFever, bring you an exclusive CAT Calculator that will calculate your score based on the answers of eleven different lead coaching centers – TIME, IMS, PT Education, Celebral Heights (CH), Career Launcher(CL), Career Forum(CF), Cat India Online(CIO), Test Funda(TF), Roots Education, Ten a Day(TaD), TCY Online(TCYO)- and give you an average score which, we are sure, will be the closest approximation to your actual score. The calculator will not predict the percentile unless an analysis of data entered by fifty thousand users is made.

The task is simple, clear and free of cost. All you have to do is -log in, mark the answers and click on the submit option. In a little while we will give you the mark sheet consisting of answers from all the above mentioned players, and finally an average outcome that would resemble your score that is one-and-a-half months away. And for all those who doubt the caliber of the calculator, let us assure you, it is as authentic as an IIM graduate!

What makes CampusFever CAT calculator a sure-help is its design for comparing your answers with almost all possible answers. The score which you get will give a clear insight of colleges you are eligible to apply for – you can weigh your marks against the requirements of various MBA colleges. The ambiguity in choosing and applying for an MBA college would be cleared.

So, if you are a CATer and have tried to bell the cat, use the CampusFever CAT Score Calculator to see if you can ride the cat!

CAT 2008 comes without surprises : a bird’s eyeview

November 16th, 2008

CAT seems to be standardizing itself, CAT 2008 didn’t have a lot of surprises to offer to its takers. The pattern was more or less similar to previous years with the only difference that English had 40 questions instead of 25.

English in CAT 2008 offered questions mixed from various sections like RC, Grammar, Usage, Complete the paragraph, fill in the blanks. Para-jumbles and FIJ’s (fact, inference, judgment) were missing this time. RC still dominated the pool with 50% (20 questions), so if you need to be a manager, you need to be an active reader is what CAT 2008 emphasizes on. Grammar that went missing in CAT 2006, was also included this time. Selection of appropriate word out of 2 also appeared without adding much surprise as it usually appeared in most of the pre CAT test series of TIME, IMS, Career Launcher, and other players.

DI/LR was comparatively easier than other sections with a lot of easy caselets, and so was quant.

Lets wait and watch the prediction of various players for the sectional cut-offs, cut-offs, solutions and analysis of CAT 2008.

Use our CAT discussion thread of CampusFever forum for the further discussion of solutions of questions, errata, and other discussions on cut off etc
